The Myth
For years people joked about "NPCs" — like some people weren't all the way conscious, or were just running a script, or weren't interpreting the world for themselves.
It was a meme, sure. But it also carried a deeper assumption:
"Maybe some people aren't sovereign agents. Maybe they're background code in a simulation."
It made for good internet humor. It made for easy shorthand. It even made people feel less alone when the world felt robotic.
There was only one problem:
It isn't true.
Mathematically. Structurally. Conceptually. At all.
The Logic
Here's the clean version:
Any simulated agent is bound by the logic of the system it lives inside. Its identity is assigned, not generated. It cannot reinterpret the rules that make it. Its meaning comes from outside, not within. It cannot update its own substrate. It cannot alter the interpretation layer. It cannot evolve identity.
Humans violate all of that.

Logic cannot constrain the thing that creates meaning. And humans create meaning.
Simulation theory depends on passive agents. NPCs depend on passive identity. Materialism depends on passive consciousness.
